Common Types of Windows for Your Home

Single Hung Windows

Single hung windows feature a classic design with a bottom sash that moves vertically while the top sash remains fixed. This window style is a cost-effective choice for homeowners looking for simplicity and functionality, making it an excellent option for any room in your house.

Double Hung Windows

Double hung windows are similar to single hung windows but with both the top and bottom sashes operable. This feature allows for increased ventilation and easier cleaning, as the sashes can tilt inward. Their versatility and ease of use make them a popular choice among homeowners.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are two hinged windows on the side and open outward with a crank, providing maximum ventilation and unobstructed views. They are ideal for hard-to-reach places like over kitchen sinks or in bathrooms, offering a blend of functionality and modern design.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are hinged at the top and open outward from the bottom, each awning window allowing for ventilation even during light rain. Their unique operation makes them suitable for adding airflow to a room without compromising on weather protection or security.

Picture Windows

Picture windows are large, fixed windows designed to provide a clear, unobstructed view of the outdoors while allowing ample natural light into a room. They are perfect for using wall space and creating a focal point in any space, enhancing the architectural style of your home without the need for opening or closing.

Fixed Windows

Fixed windows do not open but serve as a source of natural light and a way to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of your home. They come in various shapes and sizes, offering flexibility in design while contributing to energy efficiency due to their airtight seal.

Bay Windows

Bay windows project outward from the exterior wall, creating additional space and depth in a room. They typically consist of a central fixed window flanked by two windows that can be double hung window casement, double hung, or fixed, providing both a stunning view and a cozy nook.

Bow Windows

Bow windows are similar to bay windows but with a curved shape that forms a gentle arch. This window style adds elegance and space to a room, creating a panoramic view of the outdoors and bringing in abundant natural light.

Garden Windows

Garden windows extend outward from the house and feature shelves for plants, herbs, or decorative items. With windows on all sides and sometimes a skylight, they offer an excellent environment for indoor gardening while adding charm to your kitchen or living space.

Decorative Glass Windows

Decorative glass windows enhance your home’s privacy and style with beautiful patterns, textures, or colors. From stained glass to frosted and etched glass blocks and designs, these windows add artistic flair and character to any room.

Sliding Windows and Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding windows and sliding glass doors operate horizontally on a track, making them ideal for spaces where an outward opening window isn’t feasible. They provide easy access to fresh air, views, and natural light, with the added benefit of saving space.

Hopper Windows

Hopper windows are hinged at the bottom and open inward from the top, offering excellent ventilation and security. Commonly used in basements or bathrooms, they are a practical solution for tight spaces needing air circulation and light.

Specialty Windows: From Arched to Glass Block

Specialty windows, including arched and glass block designs, add unique architectural interest and custom detail to your home. Arched windows bring a touch of elegance and grandeur, while glass block windows offer privacy and diffuse light beautifully, ideal for bathrooms or as decorative accents.

What to Consider When Choosing Types of Windows for Your Home

Selecting the right windows for your home involves more than just aesthetics. Here are key factors to guide your decision:

Your home’s architectural style should influence your window choice. Classic styles may benefit from traditional window types like double hung or bay windows, while modern homes might suit the windows open casement or picture windows better.

Opt for windows with energy-saving features like double glazing, low-E coatings, and argon gas fills. Energy Star certified windows can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs.

Consider how you want your windows to operate. Do you need them to provide ventilation, like casement or awning windows, or are you looking for stationary windows like a picture window or bay windows that offer views and light?

Window frame materials impact maintenance, durability, and insulation. Vinyl and fiberglass window panels are low maintenance and energy-efficient, while wood offers a classic look but requires more upkeep.

Your budget will play a crucial role in your window selection. While some window types and materials may be more cost-effective upfront, consider long-term energy savings and maintenance costs.

The function of the room can influence the type of window you choose. Kitchens and bathrooms may benefit from windows that provide good ventilation, whereas living areas might have storm windows that focus more on light and views.

Balance the need for natural light with privacy considerations. Frosted or decorative glass can provide privacy in bathrooms, while large picture windows can enhance light in living and dining areas.

Energy Efficiency at Its Best

Our window selections are not only stylish but also highly energy efficient. With features like insulating gas fills, energy-efficient seals, and Energy Star certification, our windows reduce heat transfer, minimize air leaks, and lower energy bills. Choosing energy-efficient windows means investing in the comfort and sustainability of your home.

Window Frames and Materials

Our windows come in various frame materials, including wood, vinyl, and fiberglass, each offering distinct benefits in terms of durability, maintenance, and energy efficiency. How to Choose Between Window Types

Selecting the right window type for your home involves balancing aesthetics, functionality, and efficiency. Here’s a concise guide to making an informed choice:

Match window types to your home’s architectural design. Classic homes may suit traditional double hung or bay windows, while modern homes can benefit from the sleek lines of casement or sliding windows.

Think about what you need from your windows. For ventilation, a casement window or awning windows are ideal. If unobstructed views are a priority, picture or bay windows might be the best choice.

Look for windows that offer thermal insulation to reduce energy costs. Features like double glazing, low-E coatings, and argon gas fills are key for energy savings.

Choose window materials based on your willingness to perform maintenance. Vinyl and fiberglass require less upkeep compared to wood, which needs regular painting or staining.

Set a budget but consider long-term benefits. Energy-efficient windows may cost more initially but can offer savings on utility bills over time.

For safety and ease, consider window types that are easy to open, clean, and secure. Double hung windows, for example, offer tilt-in sashes for easy cleaning from the inside.

Balance the need for natural light with privacy considerations. Frosted or decorative glass can provide privacy in bathrooms, while large picture windows can enhance light in living and dining areas.

Xavier and his team were phenomenal with helping us and guiding throughout the process of replacing our roof. Very thorough and very patient with all of our questions every step of the way. The roof looks great and we know it will last most of our lifetime. We even had a small hiccup with our flat part of roof that wasn't draining great(no fault to CMW just an old support beam) and Xavier came out promptly and made adjustments to fix everything no questions asked. I think these guys really do pride themselves in their work, and care about making the customer happy. Xavier also didn't pressure us about any sales at any point and told us not to worry about our siding for awhile. Something we were concerned about, and that there's no rush to do that project while we save. That really goes a long way for the customer to know that they'll be available when the time comes, but when we feel ready. We will definitely be using them again when it comes time to do siding. Thank you Xavier and CMW

What to Consider When Choosing Types of Windows for Your Home

Selecting the right windows for your home involves more than just aesthetics. Here are key factors to guide your decision:

The most energy-efficient window frame material is fiberglass, closely followed by vinyl. Fiberglass frames are known for their low thermal conductivity, durability, and ability to resist temperature-induced expansion and contraction, which helps maintain a tight seal and minimizes heat transfer. Vinyl frames also offer excellent energy efficiency due to their insulating properties and are cost-effective, making them a popular choice among homeowners looking to improve their home’s energy performance.

The most common replacement windows installed in homes are double hung windows, casement windows, and picture windows. Double hung windows are favored for their traditional look and ease of cleaning, while casement windows are chosen for their ventilation efficiency and unobstructed views. Picture windows are popular for maximizing natural light and enhancing views with their large, fixed panes. These window types are versatile, fitting various architectural styles and homeowner preferences.

Several factors can influence the cost of new home windows, including:

  • Material: The type of material used for the window frame affects price, with wood typically being more expensive than vinyl or fiberglass due to its aesthetic appeal and maintenance requirements.

  • Glass Technology: Advanced features such as double glazing, low-E coatings, and gas fills increase energy efficiency but also impact cost.

  • Size and Style: Larger windows and more complex styles, such as bay or bow windows, usually cost more due to increased material and labor.

  • Customization: Custom sizes, colors, and finishes can add to the price, as they require additional manufacturing processes.

  • Installation Complexity: Factors like the condition of the existing frame, accessibility, and the need for structural adjustments can affect installation costs.

Understanding these factors can help homeowners budget effectively for their window replacement project.
